A whirlwind of colors with tourmaline

Moreover, its beauty is not its only asset. Like diamond, tourmaline has practical properties that mean it is not only found in jewelry. Among other things, it has pyroelectric properties, which cause it to accumulate opposite electric charges at its ends when heated. It can therefore be used to attract dust or small pieces of paper. It is thus used in certain devices to eliminate static electricity.

In Sri Lanka, where the name of this semi-precious stone originates, a legend says that tourmaline descended from the sky to Earth. During its descent, it supposedly passed through or slid over a rainbow that gave it its infinite color variations. Hence its name meaning "the stone of a thousand colors."

Meaning

The name tourmaline comes from "thuramali" or "thoramalli" in Sinhalese, the language of Sri Lanka, meaning "stone of a thousand colors" or "stone of mixed colors." It encompasses several minerals from the silicate family. It is a crystal that appears in the form of a rod or elongated needle grouped in a network. It is a semi-precious stone highly valued for its color varieties and quality that can rival precious stones. It has a translucent appearance with very varied colors depending on other nearby minerals that irradiate it. For example, exposed to the natural rays of granite, it will have a color ranging from pale pink to red.

The word tourmaline is currently a generic term referring to all color varieties of this stone. Examples include: Dravite (brown tourmaline), Paraíba (turquoise blue, neon blue tourmaline), Santa Rosa (emerald green tourmaline)… and the list goes on. Today, these names are often replaced by a simplified designation. The term "tourmaline" is used followed by its color.

Tourmaline

A stone you can’t do without

This stone is found on all continents: in Africa (Kenya, Madagascar…), in America (in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, California…), in Asia (India, Nepal, Sri Lanka), in Oceania (Australia), in Europe (Great Britain, Norway, Switzerland). In France, it is found in the Massif Central, the Maures Massif…

The electrical qualities of tourmaline give it a protective shield role. Surrounding static electricity and harmful radio waves from electrical devices, computers, and mobile phones are absorbed. You can place it in several spots in your home, near or on the devices emitting these waves (TV, computer, etc.).

Finally, in lithotherapy, tourmaline is a mineral with countless virtues. It has the power to calm dizziness and vertigo. Moreover, it is known to promote love and desire. Finally, it inspires peace and wisdom. This stone balances all your chakras, but pink and watermelon tourmaline specifically target the heart chakra.

Tourmaline became the official birthstone of October in 1912. It is also the stone for 52 years of marriage.
