Mother-of-pearl: origin and symbolism

Mother-of-pearl highlighted by Art'emi

Ah, the good oyster… after eating it, take the time to admire the inside of its home! Blue and pearly pink line the shell… yet these colors and shades are not due to pigments or dyes. Indeed, mother-of-pearl is a natural organic phenomenon (and not a mineral as one might think). Very hard, it is deposited in thin overlapping layers that cover the inside of the shell. It is the oyster itself that secretes these layers made of aragonite.

Mother-of-pearl is a material recognized and loved for its iridescent reflections. Very elegant and refined, it is a gemstone that we love to wear in jewelry. Its soft appearance will give you confidence and reveal your femininity. The shades of this precious stone will enhance rings, bracelets, earrings, or even necklaces.

Mother-of-pearl, a gemstone with rainbow colors

The word "nacre" comes from the Arabic "naqqarah." In English, it is called "Mother-of-Pearl" after Queen Elizabeth I gave it this name.

Ultimately, mother-of-pearl is the inner coating, with iridescent (rainbow) reflections, of certain mollusk shells such as oysters and abalones. Biosynthesized by the mantle and composed of aragonite crystals bound by a protein called conchiolin. It is the thin layers of aragonite that cause the iridescence effect, those beautiful mother-of-pearl reflections that change depending on the viewing angle. Additionally, the milky color and the iridescent reflections, exceptional in mother-of-pearl, quickly made it very popular in jewelry making, but also for buttons, musical instruments (many luthiers use it to personalize instruments. Although expensive, the result is often very beautiful and transforms the instrument into a true work of art), and other decorative or fashion items.

Finally, for the Greeks, these pearls are a symbol of love, and they would give their beloved a worked mother-of-pearl jewel. Catholics also cherish it because it symbolizes purity and gentleness. Moreover, they use it to make effigies of the Virgin or rosaries. For Polynesians, mother-of-pearl is considered the marine reflection of the deity, "the smile of the gods"…

The benefits and care of these gems

In lithotherapy, mother-of-pearl, due to its milky color, is said to have maternal and protective virtues. It would gently protect against external aggressions and bring calm and serenity. Thus, it would protect against negative influences and be very reassuring.

Mother-of-pearl is organic, and therefore very sensitive to your environment. It is cleaned using lukewarm water, soap, and a soft brush to remove dirt marks. What could be simpler? No need to go to the ends of the earth to find a magical product; everything is in your bathroom. Please grab your brushes.

A surprising combination between the whiteness of the stone and the shine of the metal

The vast majority of mother-of-pearl jewelry is made of silver or white gold, but some, in yellow gold, offer a surprising combination between the pure whiteness of the mother-of-pearl and the warm shine of the metal. The jewelry offers several precious metals to create these pieces. They are made from

  • solid silver
  • vermeil
  • gold
  • rose gold.

It is thanks to these quality materials that we can guarantee the hardness and longevity of our jewelry.
