Its history and origins

Cotton is a natural plant fiber that surrounds the seeds of the cotton plant. It is the most used material worldwide in the textile industry. The cotton fiber is transformed into thread to make fabric. It is used in

  • clothing,
  • furnishing,
  • automotive,
  • jewelry…

The use of cotton dates back thousands of years. The Egyptians were already using it more than 12,000 years BC. It gained importance in Europe from the 15th century, especially in Barcelona, Bruges, and Ghent. It later developed in America, with its many plantations. The first spinning machine appeared in 1764. It revolutionized the industry. Finally, at the beginning of the 19th century, Joseph Jacquard invented the famous automatic loom that we all know.

This material is created in the form of a perennial plant that can reach about ten meters and can live for more than 10 years. The large flowers that grow on the cotton plant produce fruit in the form of capsules. Each capsule contains about thirty seeds, divided into 4 to 5 compartments. Once ripe, these capsules open to release the seeds wrapped in a cotton ball. Then comes the harvesting stage, which can be manual or mechanical, to bring the cotton capsules to a factory.

First, the capsules are shaken to remove impurities like leaves or stems. Then comes the ginning, where the cotton fiber is separated from the seed. Finally, the cotton goes through a cleaning step to eliminate the remaining small impurities. The fibers are then compressed to form cotton bales weighing several hundred kilograms, which will be sent to the textile factories that will produce the cotton fabric.

Cotton Jewelry: The specifics, care, and meanings of cotton

Cotton is a material that has many advantages. First, it has quite an impressive absorption capacity. Indeed, it can absorb up to 8.5% of its weight in water. Second, it also has insulating power, which protects us from the cold outside and retains our body heat inside. And finally, it withstands heat well! No worries about your cotton bracelet. As you have read, it is a very durable fabric that will accompany you no matter what you do.

Regarding its care, it is a fabric that can be machine washed. However, we do not recommend putting your set in the machine because mother-of-pearl pendants in silver or with a semi-precious stone like mother-of-pearl could be damaged.
